Academy at Ivy Ridge was a private boarding school located in Ogdensburg, New York. It was part of the controversial group of behavior modification facilities often referred to as the "troubled teen industry." The academy catered to teenagers who were experiencing behavioral issues and whose parents sent them there in hopes of improvement.
Established in 2001, the Academy at Ivy Ridge operated under the umbrella of the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs (WWASP), a network known for strict disciplinary methods. It attracted significant criticism for its practices, which some former students and parents characterized as abusive.
The controversy surrounding the school and others like it often revolved around allegations of harsh disciplinary approaches and inadequate education. In 2005, the New York State Education Department determined that the academy was issuing diplomas without proper accreditation. This led to an investigation, and the school was subsequently banned from enrolling students from New York State.
Due to ongoing legal and regulatory pressure, as well as negative media attention, the Academy at Ivy Ridge ceased operations in early 2009. The closure marked one of several similar institutions shutting down amid increased scrutiny of the troubled teen industry.
